Natural remedies for bites and stings

An afternoon in the garden or a picnic in the park can end in tears thanks to a brush with a biting bug or nettle bush. Thankfully there are some reliable natural remedies that can soothe stings or bites, so you can get back to enjoying the sunshine as soon as possible.

Dock leaves

When a walk in the woods leads to an unfortunate encounter with stinging nettles, there is one well-known remedy we all remember from childhood. Dock leaves are commonly found growing near nettles, and can be rubbed on the affected area to provide relief from itching and inflammation.

Ice

Bee and wasp stings can be very unpleasant, but ice can provide instant relief from a sting, helping to reduce inflammation and cooling the skin.

Honey

Honey can help to heal bites and stings and relieve pain and itching. Honey is naturally antibacterial, and can also help to reduce inflammation.

Aloe vera gel

With its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, aloe vera gel is one of the best natural remedies for a bite or sting. This plant-based gel cools and moisturises the skin, making it perfect for soothing sunburn too. Whether at home or away, aloe vera gel should be one of your summertime essentials.

Witch hazel

Apply a small amount of witch hazel to a cotton wool ball, and dab onto the affected area. Witch hazel can reduce inflammation and soothe burning and irritation. It is also a good natural remedy for bruises and minor burns, making it handy to have in your family’s first aid kit.
